OSLO — The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on 9 October, recognising her work to advance peace and international law.

The South African jurist’s career spans the struggle against apartheid, international criminal justice and the United Nations human-rights system. She served at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and later as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The committee highlighted the role of legal accountability in addressing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Its announcement linked the award to the importance of strengthening the international legal order.

The United Nations also congratulated the former high commissioner. The award is a recognition of her career and contribution to justice; it is separate from the legal findings or procedural status of any particular international court case.
