GENEVA — The World Health Organization announced on 25 September 2026 that it is expanding its medical device prequalification programme. The change brings additional contraceptive products and computer-aided tuberculosis screening software into a framework used to assess quality, safety and performance.
WHO said prequalification for male and female condoms and intrauterine devices is being transferred from the United Nations Population Fund. Devices used for voluntary medical male circumcision are also being integrated into the broader medical device framework after previously being assessed separately.
The programme will now include computer-aided detection software that analyses digital chest X-rays to identify people who may need further tuberculosis testing. WHO assessments follow an independent, standardized process. Products that meet the criteria appear on its prequalified list, which helps UN agencies, procurement organizations and national authorities make purchasing decisions.
The announcement does not mean that every product in the new categories has already been approved. WHO said further details on the transition and first assessment wave are available separately.
