The European Parliament approved updated rules on occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals on 6 October 2026, with 499 votes in favour, 49 against and 104 abstentions.
The changes cover substances used in industries including batteries, chemicals and textiles. The Parliament’s announcement identifies cobalt compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 1,4-dioxane among the substances addressed, alongside a long-term exposure limit for isoprene.
The framework also addresses training, protection for emergency workers and breaks in uncontaminated areas when respiratory protective equipment is used.
The vote does not mean every new limit applies immediately in every workplace. National transposition and substance-specific transitional arrangements determine implementation. Employers and workers should distinguish Parliament’s approval from the effective dates in the final legal framework. Preventing exposure remains broader than distributing personal protective equipment alone.
