ANKARA — Urban rail lines totalling 220.85 kilometres were under construction in nine Turkish cities, the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry announced on 7 October 2026.

The programme includes projects in Konya, Kocaeli, Ankara, Istanbul, Samsun, Trabzon, Sakarya, Afyonkarahisar and Bursa. The ministry put the existing nationwide urban rail network at 1,054.7 kilometres.

A separate group of approximately 188 kilometres of proposed lines remained at feasibility and study stages. Those schemes should not be counted as construction already under way.

The announcement did not provide one common opening date for all projects. New line length is one measure of investment; station access, interchange arrangements and reliable operation determine how the network serves passengers. Planned, under-construction and operational lines should remain separate in comparisons of the programme’s progress.
