    AGD BRIEF — NEW YORK

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to outline Tehran’s position on Israel, Gaza and the Iranian nuclear programme. He said Iran did not seek war but would respond to attacks, while maintaining that negotiations remained possible if conducted on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

Pezeshkian said Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons and described peaceful nuclear technology for medicine, agriculture, energy and industry as a national right. He accused the international system of applying different standards to Iran and Israel, particularly over nuclear oversight, military action and sanctions.

On Gaza, he called for civilian protection, humanitarian access and recognition of Palestinian political rights. Figures concerning casualties and alleged attacks were presented in his speech as the Iranian government’s official claims.

Pezeshkian combined a deterrence message with an offer of diplomacy, arguing that pressure and sanctions would not produce a lasting settlement. He called for consistent application of international law and impartial accountability mechanisms.
